OUGD4O1 The Photograph as a document

Documentary photography:
Images of the working classes and poverty.
Reporting and war.
There is a power balance in documentary photographer and the subject - one always has more power than the other, this is usually the photographer.

Recording an important historical event, documenting the people power.
William Edward Killburn. 'The great chartist meeting at the common' 1848.
The photographer is an invisible observer. His presence is not acknowledged by the people in the image.

Grahame Clarke:
in many contexts the notion of a literal and objective record of 'history' is a limited illusion. It ignores the entire cultural and social background against which the image was taken.

Russel Lee
'Interior of a black farmers house' 1939.
No human being in the photo.

Dorothea Lange
'Migrant mother' 1936.
No conversation with the subject, not asking the woman in the photo her name, or anything about her, The woman is merely an object in a photograph. The cull of images matters more than the poverty in which it is to represent.
-Images seen in magazine.
Other images provide context, we are given more information about the ife of the woman and her children. The images taken from afar better describe the social situation and reveal the real conditions however the closest was chosen for publication because it was the best photograph.

Walker Evans photography.
Modernist aesthetic, pure and straight photography which was valued in documentary photography at the time. Showing the white lines etc around the edge, images are left un cropped without manipulation.

American documentary photography, obsessed with things and not people.
For example Walker Evans coca cola shack.

'Graveyard, houses and steel mill, Bethlehem Pennsylvania.'

Robert Frank goes on a road trip through America. He redefines documentary photography in the 1950's. Unusual approach to documentary, not showing the faces of his subjects, 'parade- Hoboken, New Jersey'

William Klein 'Dance in Brooklyn' 1955.
Goes away from the idea that everything has to be informational, uses blur and grain to create a dark condition.
Captures the movement of the city.

Magnum group founded in 1947 by Cartier-Bresson and capa.
A group of people that want to document the world.
'The decisive moment' - Bresson.

Photography achieves its highest distinction- reflecting the university of the human condition in s never- to- be retrieved fraction of a second. -Cartier-Bresson.
France. Paris. Place de l'Europe. Gare saint Lazare. 1932.
No manipulation of the image, modernist aesthetic.

Robert Capa 'The falling soldier' 1936.
Photographed at a location where there was no fighting. Gone back and tried to reconstruct the photo. The location implied in the photograph is not the location where war took place.

'Normandy, France' 1945.
Implies that he is in the water, and is a soldier. The camera and a gun become one in the same.

George Rodger
'Bergen-Belson concentration camp' 1945.
stays away from the horror of photography. Could take close up documentary photos. However takes them with a sense of respect and distance.

Robert Haeberle 'People about to be shot' 1969.
Photographer shouts 'hold it' before people are about to be shot.
so that he the photography can 'shoot' the people first, thus creating a harrowing image.

William Neidich.
Constructs photography of events that are missing in photographic history. Reconstructs events and photographs them, when they would be impossible to have shot at the time. Reconstructs American history- American cover ups.

Edward Curtis Native North.
Sepia and Softness. Documenting the disappearance of this tribal existence. However it does not show why or who is responsible for this fading culture. William Neidich then goes back and constructs the missing links and photographs them. Therefore photographing the Americans killing the Native Americans in reference to the native American genocide and The Native American removal act.

OUGD406 Design Boards

Workshop about Design Boards

Peter Saville-
Successful graphic designer
In house art director, Ideas based
Factory Records

Paul Arden ' Whatever you think, think the opposite, Look out the window and whatever catches your eye, a brid, a tv aerial, an old man on crutches or whatever, make that the solution to your problem'

'Do not seek practise, seek critism' ask 'Can you find sault with this'

'Dont give a speech, Put on a show'

'Astonish me'

'If you cant solve a problem its because you're playing by the rules'

When designing be a good idea to show how someone (company may dispay it)
Can jsut be rough sketches of your ideas

Dont just answer the brief, take it further
Maybe create a page with swatches and fonts that you have chosen
Show how it would work on different devices- Ipad, Iphone etc.

Democratic Lecture by Craig Oldham

What is Graphic design-Back to basics
A)  logical/ rationale- Designers that use logic,, utilise clarity and function, Rationale the communicative elements.
B) Emotional- Designers that use any and every form of communication available humour/wit

Brand spanking- People dont understand what branding actually is. People dont understand the context. Branding- Consistancy, not just a logo. ' The deeper you dig, the higher you rise'

Portfolio- The portfolio is probably the most subjective piece of work you will ever design. Be prepared for knock backs, not everyone will like your portfolio, but you need  to be happy with and justify what you have done.
Please dont be a Twat, Get a placement.
'There is a growing feeling amoung practitioners that theory is taking over from practise. Design graduates, many believe....'

'This biggest change has been a huge increase in student numbers the UK now produces an estimated 15,000 designers'

OUGD406 Communication is a Virus

In our groups we assigned a research theme to go and look at. My research theme was to look at the Cafe environment and things that would be relevant. We had decided that we would have a cafe where you can go either sit in and drink tea and have lunch/snacks but also to be able to mix your own teas to take away with you. The idea came from the idea of pick and mix set ups that you get in a variety of shops. In essence you would be able to look at the individual tea leafs choose the flavours you want. The machine ideally would be electronic so you can type in or choose what flavours you might like to look at. On this is would give you the origin what it is best used for. There would also be an option to give you a certain amount. Which would then pour into the correct bag/container. This way it would avoid contamination and as many teas are delicate it would avoid damaging the leaves by touch.

This image is from a blog about Paris (link above) however there was another link from the original image of a tea shop company in France www.mariagefreres.com. This company only has one tea shop in the UK and that is at Selfridges in London. It is a very old fashioned looking tea shop but it looks classy and sophisticated. This is the style of Tea however our aim is to encourage people to start thinking differently towards it and turning it into a trendy and modern drink. Therefore although this iconic style works we want to challenge this and design and create something that is a bit more current.

The Images and info below are all found on this blog

They are all contemporary styles some more modern then others, but it shows a good range of styles. You can see the oriental theme in some but also a very old English themed. I particularly like the ones that are bright and colourful. Perhaps dependent on my group we could consider doing a style like this.

TEA SHOP! J-Tea retail by Benjamin Weachter, Eugene – USA

Starbucks 15th Avenue Coffee & Tea Shop, Seatle
Starbucks went back to basics in its 15th Avenue location with a rustic combination of salvaged barnwood, old warehouse lighting, rusted wire chandeliers adorned with clothespins, and large photographs depicting coffee and tea rituals.

TEA SHOP! Great Wall Tea Company by Marianne Amodio, New Westminster – Canada
A staggered array of 568 standard tea containers are magnetized to create tea storage, signage and an ever changing display of imagery. It also lends the tea shop their name: Great Wall Tea Company. The long linear walnut counter is designed as a nod to the bar, where patrons lounge, sip and socialize.

TEA SHOP! TeBella Tea Shop by Chris Rossi Studio, Tampa – USA

The Gourmet Tea by Alan Chu, São Paulo
'Flat panels on a multi-coloured wall slide, swing and roll out to create a secret tea shop in a São Paulo shopping centre. Designed by Brazilian architect Alan Chu, the counter of The Gourmet Tea slides forward from beneath a purple hatch, while shelves can be wheeled out from behind a grey panel and a cupboard emerges from behind a large brown door.'

TEA SHOP! Tracy Stern SALONTEA, Vancouver

TEA SHOP! Twinings 216 Strand Tea Shop, London
Thomas Twining bought Tom’s Coffee House on London’s Strand in 1706. The location of the shop was perfect as it straddled the border between Westminster and the City of London, an area that was newly populated with the aristocracy displaced by the Great Fire of London.

Whether you just want a pot of tea or a full meal, they will accommodate your tastes. Open daily.
Samovar Tea Lounge – multiple locations in San Francisco. The Yerba Buena Gardens location features outdoor seating at comfortable tables and chairs, as well as indoor seating. It has a modern feel with its sleek interior design. They serve tea and brunch daily.
Lovejoys Tea Room (lower Noe Valley) - this is a relaxed setting for tea, think of visiting your favorite eccentric Aunt in her Victorian decorated home. The room is filled with antiques and the staff is accommodating. The tea snacks are delicious and this is a fun place to have tea. Open Wednesday through Sunday at 11:00 AM until 6 PM.

Argo Tea Cafe
http://www.tea-happiness.com/2010/11/argo-tea-cafe.html
Argo Tea cafe is a cafe that does a similar thing to what we are after. The style in which there tea is stored is a clever initiative, however if agreed with my group i think we would like to take on a more electronical style to the machine that would dispence the tea.

Simple signage that uses only 2 colours plus stock like our brief.
